Arsenal are in a position this season where they could achieve something truly special.

The Gunners are nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table, which puts them firmly in control of the title race. They also have one foot in the semi-finals of the Champions League after winning their quarter-final first leg against Sporting CP.

For most supporters, winning the league would be the priority, especially after coming so close in recent years.

However, Mikel Arteta’s dream is much bigger – the Champions League.

Mikel Arteta’s ‘greatest ambition’ is to win the Champions League at Arsenal

Arsenal have never won the Champions League in their history.

The European crown remains the one major trophy missing from their cabinet. Even the great Arsene Wenger could not win it in his 22 years at the club.

That is something Arteta is determined to change.

The Independent have learned from their sources that the Champions League really drives Arteta, so much so that becoming the first Arsenal manager to win it is his ‘greatest ambition’ in football.

The Gunners reached the semi-finals of the competition last season and were arguably the better side over two legs.

However, eventual winners PSG knocked Arteta’s men out.

This season, Arsenal will face either Barcelona or Atletico Madrid in the semi-final, assuming that they finish the job against Sporting CP in the second leg.

The North Londoners have already beaten Atleti, while Micah Richards has claimed that Arsenal will destroy Barcelona and their high line.

So, reaching the final is not a far-fetched dream for Arteta, and if things go his way, his biggest goal could be achieved this season.

Arsenal are in the perfect position to make history this season

Arsenal are favourites to win the Premier League and the Champions League this season.

Winning the European Cup would not just be another trophy in the cabinet; it would change how the club is viewed across the continent.

It is the one achievement that would take Arsenal to a completely different level and bring an end to all the mocking from rival supporters.

Arteta’s squad has the quality and depth to beat any team left in the competition. They have players who can step up in big moments too and shouldn’t be scared of anybody.

That makes this a rare opportunity for Arsenal, and Arteta will know that chances like this do not come around often.

If the Gunners’ boss gets it right, history will remember him as the first manager to win the Champions League at Arsenal. Nobody can take that away from him.
