It’s not easy for a coach to get a job at Arsenal.

The Gunners are among the biggest clubs on the planet, and you have to be among the very best to be working inside the club.

Mikel Arteta is the manager of the Arsenal first team, and his job hasn’t been in doubt in recent years.

However, there have been a lot of changes at academy level, and that opened the door for a former Gunner to return to the club.

But he said no.

Jack Wilshere says he rejected the Arsenal U21s job

Jack Wilshere is a fan favourite at Arsenal.

The Englishman was a product of the academy when he was a player, and he went on to play nearly 200 games for the Gunners.

Injuries ruined Wilshere’s career as a player, so in the summer of 2022, Arsenal made him the manager of their U18s side.

After spending two years in that role and doing a great job, Wilshere joined Norwich City to become their first-team coach.

Following his exit from the Canaries last summer, reports revealed that Arsenal were in talks to bring Wilshere back as the U21s boss. However, the 33-year-old has now revealed that he snubbed the Gunners.

Here’s how his conversation with Andy Goldstein went on the latter’s Instagram Live.

Wilshere: I don’t work for Arsenal.

Goldstein: Who do you work for?

Wilshere: No one!

Goldstein: So you’re unemployed?

Wilshere: Yeah!

Goldstein: I thought you were back with the U21s.

Wilshere: Nah, I said no.

Who did Arsenal choose to become their U21s manager instead of Jack Wilshere?

Wilshere got a taste of senior management at Norwich City towards the end of last season, and managed to pick up four points from two games.

The Englishman would’ve loved the permanent role at Carrow Road, but the club decided to go in another direction.

The opportunity to return as the Arsenal U21s manager then arrived for Wilshere, but the former midfielder, as he said above, decided against it.

Arsenal then turned their focus to Max Porter, and he has been at the helm of the U21s since August.

Wilshere, who Arteta called ‘special’, seems to be looking for a senior management role at another club.
