Arsenal transfer target Nico Williams continues to impress in La Liga for Athletic Club.
The Spaniard registered his tenth league goal contribution of the season on Sunday evening, spectacularly firing past Augusto Batalla in the Ray Vallecano net at the Estadio de San Mames.
The strike set the Basque side on their way to victory, with Ernesto Valverde’s team ultimately easing past Vallecano 3-1, cementing their place in the top four.
Arsenal are known to hold a strong interest in Williams, and they’d certainly have been impressed with what he was able to produce in his latest outing.

Spain’s media praise Arsenal transfer target Nico Williams
Spain’s media criticised Williams for his display against Rangers in the Europa League in midweek, and he subsequently dropped to the bench for the clash against Vallecano.
However, it’s likely that Valverde was merely resting one of his most talented players ahead of next week’s second leg against the Glaswegian outfit.
With the game poised at 1-1 and Athletic Club struggling to break the opposition’s low block down, Williams was introduced in the 73rd minute.
Working the ball nicely from a corner with ten minutes left to play, Inigo Ruiz de Galarreta found the explosive winger, who expertly curled the ball into the far corner with his weaker foot.
Spanish media were full of praise for the Arsenal target after the game, with AS describing the goal as ‘stunning’.
Meanwhile, Mundo Deportivo waxed lyrical about Williams in their individual assessments of each player.
Awarding him with three stars out of three in their player ratings, they wrote: “Accurate. A few minutes and a lot of good things, including the second goal. A great goal.”
Managing two touches in the opposition box and completing a dribble, this was certainly an electric cameo from Williams.

Is Nico Williams the right signing for Arsenal?
Arsenal are considering Rafael Leao as an alternative to Williams, which indicates that they aren’t set on the Spain international.
An extremely exciting wide player, Williams is perhaps still a bit too raw to immediately slot into the Premier League and play at the highest level.
| Williams’ La Liga Statistics 2024/25 | |
| Appearances | 27 |
| Goals | 5 |
| Assists | 5 |
| Shots per 90 | 2.47 |
| Expected Goals per 90 | 0.18 |
| Key Passes per 90 | 1.86 |
| Expected Assists per 90 | 0.20 |
| Successful Take-ons per 90 | 3.00 |
Completing three dribbles per 90 minutes, he’d certainly add a chaos factor to an Arsenal attack that is often predictable and sterile.
However, Williams’ isn’t yet particularly effective at turning his dribbling into particularly valuable moments inside the opposition box, as shown by his disappointing underlying numbers.
The raw ingredients are there, but anyone expecting the player to come straight into the Gunners’ side and be excellent immediately doesn’t have an accurate view of what he is as a player.
