‘Superstar’ who left Arsenal for £35 million now wishes he’d stayed at the club for so much longer

Arsenal icon Cesc Fabregas has now expressed some regret over the timing of his decision to leave the club for Barcelona back in 2011.

Fabregas was speaking via Sky Sports and said he usually doesn’t enjoy harping on the past, but he did make this one admission.

Discussing leaving Arsenal for Barcelona, Fabregas said: “I’m a very positive guy and I always like to look forward, I don’t like to look backwards too much.

“But maybe when I went to Barcelona from Arsenal, I think if I could go back now on time, I could wait a little bit more and I could have gone maybe a little bit later.”

Of course, Fabregas leaving the club was a gut-wrenching decision for fans at the time.

The Spaniard was captaining the side under Arsene Wenger and was loved by the Emirates faithful.

And now retired at 36-years-old, it may bring fans some comfort to know that Fabregas did end up questioning his own decision.

Fast forward to today, and those same fans will now be very grateful that Arsenal are no longer a ‘selling club’.

Arsene Wenger too often lost his best players to his rivals, but the same won’t be said of Mikel Arteta.

Instead of now losing their best players, Arsenal are pipping their rivals to key deals.

Declan Rice was heavily linked to Manchester City in the summer before he joined Arsenal in a monumental £105m move.

And although the likes of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli now look very settled at Arsenal, they may have been difficult to keep 10 years ago.

Arsenal are now in a new era, and seem to be in a much stronger position financially.

Of course, the club are now bearing some of the reward for the excellent job Arsene Wenger did helping the side stay competitive whilst moving stadiums.

And although Fabregas may regret leaving Arsenal for Barcelona so soon, the £35m deal may have been a good financial decision for the club at the time.

Fabregas will always remain an Arsenal ‘superstar’ for some fans, whilst others are still finding his move to Chelsea hard to forgive.
