Former Arsenal star Matteo Guendouzi ultimately did not become a success at the club, and he joined in a tough period for the Gunners.
He was one of Unai Emery’s first signings during his ill-fated spell in charge, and Arsenal finished in fifth and eighth place during Guendouzi’s time in North London.
Nevertheless, this did not mean that the Frenchman did not play alongside some quality players. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was at his devastating best during Guendouzi’s first season, winning the Golden Boot, whilst the likes of Alexandre Lacazette and Aaron Ramsey were also top performers.
The Lazio midfielder fell out with Mikel Arteta prior to his eventual exit, but has now named who his best teammate at the Emirates was.
Matteo Guendouzi names Mesut Ozil as his favourite Arsenal teammate
In an interview with The Athletic, Guendouzi claimed that former midfield superstar Mesut Ozil was his best teammate during his time at Arsenal.
“I was so young, I played a lot, I was very happy with this. I learnt a lot with great players,” he stated of his time at the club.
“Mesut Ozil was the best, an amazing player with the ball — he sees things you would never see in your life.”
Guendouzi and Ozil were both exiled from Arteta’s squad at similar times over disciplinary issues, but prior to his poor ending at the club, Ozil had established himself as a cult hero at the Emirates.
Mesut Ozil’s incredible ability on the ball

Guendouzi has highlighted Ozil’s vision and creative ability on the ball as two of his strongest traits, and it is easy to see why.
Despite Ozil declining in his later years, he was still capable of moments of true magic, and Guendouzi got to witness this first-hand in one sensational performance against Leicester City.
A stunning team move saw Ozil flick the ball to Guendouzi at the halfway line, with it then played forward before the German pulled off a silky dummy, then laying it off to Aubameyang in what is one of the finest team goals at Arsenal in recent years.
Ozil’s technique and natural ability were world-class throughout his career, and training alongside him as a teenager would have been a great learning experience for Guendouzi.
Guendouzi would later develop a strong final ball at Marseille, and this could have been helped by watching Ozil up closely.
