Sol Campbell is either loved or despised in North London, as the defender left Tottenham to join Arsenal in 2001.

Campbell gets glowing reviews in and around N5 however, the closer one moves to N17, the more the opinion on the retired England international changes.

Arsenal were the happier side from the exchange in 2001, with the Englishman going on to win two Premier League titles for the Gunners, as well as being an Invincible.

It’s unsurprising that the Lilywhites are touchy when it comes to Campbell, who still mocks Spurs at any given opportunity.

Sol Campbell reveals the difference between Arsenal and Tottenham

Several players have represented Arsenal and Tottenham, but Campbell’s transfer was the most prominent by far.

The centre-back was Spurs’ captain when he left the club to join the Gunners, crossing enemy lines to go on to win major silverware.

From the outside looking in, the difference between the rivals was clear to see but what was it really like for a player to transfer at the time?

Speaking to Stick to Football, Campbell revealed the difference between Arsenal and Spurs when it came to the dressing rooms.

“You just feel the quality when you step through. You feel the quality. You feel like this is set up to win,” Campbell told the pannel.

“The possibility to win. And the characters in the room are… You just feel it, that’s what it’s all about. You’ve got winners in there, you’ve got guys who are working hard, top players who are still doing just 15, 20 minutes at the end.

“That’s what it’s all about and no one is telling them to do that, they’re doing it because they’ve got pride and they’re quality players.”

Campbell’s revelation is perhaps unsurprising, as the Englishman joined a side consistently challenging Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United for the Premier League title.

Campbell’s career at Arsenal Tottenham

As the famous song goes, Campbell won the double in his first season at Arsenal, collecting the Premier League and FA Cup to really rub salt in the wounds at White Hart Lane.

While the former England international left Arsenal as a two-time Premier League winner amongst other prizes, he did also win a trophy at Spurs.

In 1999, Campbell won the League Cup with Tottenham, captaining the squad to beat Leicester City in the final, the penultimate trophy Arsenal’s rivals won before beginning their silverware drought.

There’s certainly no love lost between Spurs and Campbell however, at the Emirates, the adoration for the ex-defender will never stop growing.
