Mikel Arteta has a lot of work to do after Arsenal’s humiliating defeat to Newcastle United in the EFL Cup.
The Gunners entered the game knowing its importance, with a real chance of silverware presented to Arteta’s side.
Instead, the game unfolded as the furthest thing from a cup semi-final, as Arsenal crumbled against Newcastle, who walked away from the first leg with a two-goal lead.
Now, the EFL Cup final looks to be out of reach for the Gunners, who must go to St James’ Park and correct their mistakes from the opening leg.

Mikel Arteta takes aim at Arsenal fans after EFL Cup defeat
The result was a nightmare for Arsenal, who failed to take advantage of playing the first leg at home disastrously.
While Arsenal couldn’t find the net from their 23 shots on goal, Newcastle scored twice from their seven attempts, telling of where Arteta’s side are struggling.
Though the verdict is clear, the Arsenal manager had other quibbles from the contest, some more bizarre than others.
Arteta blamed the EFL Cup ball being different to the one used in the Premier League for one and also, expressed his displeasure with supporters at the Emirates.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, the boss was asked to comment on fans leaving early, as the Emirates began to empty from the 75th minute.
“That’s their decision, we try our best,” Arteta said before hammering home the importance of support in the stadium.
“It’s their decision to stay behind the team or leave. I mention it many times how critical it is to keep that energy and belief in the stadium.”
Regardless of opinion on whether fans should stay until the full-time whistle, for the debate to even be had is a clear issue for Arsenal, who are experiencing a subtle decline this campaign.
What Arteta said about the Emirates before the game
Football is about fans, and supporters react to what they see, which on the night against Newcastle was far from acceptable.
The Geordies took over N5 with their joyous response to their squad’s display, something the home supporters could not relate to.
It’s a shame, as before the fixture, Arteta stressed the importance of the Emirates acting as the 12th man.
“We need a big, big atmosphere in our stadium,” the manager said, before expressing his admiration for the home support.
“I admire the Emirates the most – 100%, the way we can feel at the Emirates with our people is incredible and I’m very positive that tomorrow we’re going to create a big one.”
The Arsenal squad didn’t produce enough and to some degree, neither did supporters in the latter stages of what was a punishing night for the Gunners.
