Arsenal welcomed Monaco to the Emirates Stadium for a Champions League clash on Wednesday evening.

This fixture might be dubbed the Thierry Henry derby, as the former striker is an icon from his playing days with both clubs.

The Frenchman began his professional career at Monaco, whilst Arsene Wenger was in charge of the principality club, and was on the books there whilst he was part of the 1998 World Cup winning squad.

However, it was not until Wenger brought Henry to Arsenal in 1999 that the pair were able to work together for an extended period.

The striker spent eight years in North London, winning two Premier League titles and two FA Cups, before moving on to join Barcelona. Henry is a true Arsenal legend, and is the top goalscorer in the club’s history.

After hanging up his boots, the 47-year-old returned to Monaco for a brief stint in charge as manager.

Thierry Henry reveals what Arsenal means to him

With Arsenal hosting Monaco at the Emirates Stadium for this Champions League fixture, Henry was asked on CBS Sports Golazo where his heart truly lies.

He said: “That’s a tough one, I’ll be honest with you, because Monaco gave me an opportunity… to become what I became. Then, obviously, they gave me an opportunity as a coach. So I have mad respect for Monaco and that’s always going to be the case, but Arsenal is where my heart is and that will never change.”

Having named Mikel Arteta’s as his number one pick, Henry was asked who is No.2 – Monaco or Barcelona?

He replied: “Number two, Arsenal. Three, Arsenal. That’s about it… That’s my team in Spain, Barcelona. Monaco will always be my team in France, but Arsenal is Arsenal, that’s why I don’t leave it.”

Arsenal legends who still support the club

Henry is not the only iconic former Arsenal star who still throws his support behind the club.

Martin Keown still believes Arsenal can win the Premier League title.

Meanwhile, Gilberto Silva has praised the work done by Arteta in his time at the helm.

It is important for the club to maintain a tight bond with their great past players, as such figures become ambassadors for the side, be it in an official or unofficial capacity. These legends are part of the club’s history and identity, and mean a great deal to the supporters.
