Thierry Henry achieved great things at Arsenal under the tutelage of Arsene Wenger.

The legendary Frenchman is one of the greatest managers of all time. He came to Arsenal in 1996 and completely revolutionised the club.

Arsenal wouldn’t be who they are today without Wenger. The Gunners were already a big club, but he made them bigger than they ever thought they could be.

Wenger’s greatest achievement was when he led Arsenal to the Premier League title without winning a single game. Henry has now shared a story about that campaign.

Thierry Henry shares why Arsenal’s Invincibles ‘suffered’ because of Arsene Wenger

Going an entire season unbeaten has to be the greatest achievement in Premier League history.

Fans of rival clubs will point at how other teams have won more games or scored more goals, but there is a reason why nobody has been able to replicate what Arsenal did in 2003/04.

Henry was a key part of the Invincibles season, and he has now admitted that going unbeaten was a ridiculously difficult task, especially after they wrapped up the league.

The World Cup winner has revealed that all the players were shocked when Wenger asked them to keep pushing even after winning the title – he didn’t want them to lose a game.

That confused Henry at the time, but he has admitted now that Wenger was right.

Henry told BBC Sport: “We suffered! I’ll be honest with you, Alex (Scott), we suffered. I remember Arsene came in the dressing room and said “Guys, come on, it’s important for you, you will cherish that later on’. We were like ‘what is he talking about, this guy?’

“It was like asking a fighter to go in the ring after his fight – ‘I won it, what do you want me to do? Win the round a bit better? Or to not get touched?’ What are you doing? I’ve won!’ So we were like ‘what?’

“I have to say, if anyone wants to – don’t – but if anyone wants to watch the Birmingham game after we won the league at the Lane, don’t watch it. It was horrible, It was shocking, horrible. This is why when people compare points and wins and this and that… if we didn’t have to go all the way, we would’ve won more games. But, we were already champions.

“We didn’t understand what was happening, Arsene made us understand what was happening. I think we drew against Birmingham, we drew against Portsmouth, we won at Fulham… we just finished the season and managed to stay unbeaten.

“You don’t understand what’s happening at the time when you do it. In the history of the game when you look back at it, yeah, Arsene was right. He thought we could stay unbeaten and we did.”

There’s one thing nobody can deny about Arsenal’s Invincibles

The Premier League has seen some truly incredible teams over the years.

Sir Alex Ferguson built a few great Manchester United sides, while Jose Mourinho’s first Chelsea team were absolutely incredible too. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are right up there with the best as well.

However, it was Wenger’s Arsenal Invincibles who achieved the greatest feat in the history of the Premier League – nothing anyone else has done beats it.

Even Ferguson, who is widely regarded as the best manager of all time, named Arsenal’s Invincibles achievement as the greatest ever.

He said: “I won 13 leagues but I was never near going through a season undefeated. That achievement, it stands aside, stands above everything else. And it was Arsenal’s!”
