Tim Howard believes that Enzo Marseca and Ruben Amorim’s sackings this week highlight how well Mikel Arteta has done to win real power at Arsenal.

In this day and age of football, managers more often than not find themselves given the title of head coach and handed a select amount of power.

Fill in the blank: Mikel Arteta should push Arsenal to sign a ___________ in January…

What is Arsenal’s most pressing issue for January?

Maresca and Amorim both fought for power at Chelsea and Manchester United, respectively; however, that ended up costing them their jobs.

At Arsenal, Arteta has seemingly become one of the key decision makers, with Edu Gaspar’s sacking being a key shift in power towards the Spanish coach.

Tim Howard on Mikel Arteta winning control at Arsenal

Tim Howard believes Mikel Arteta has managed something at Arsenal that not many managers achieve by winning real control over decisions.

Following six years at the Emirates Stadium, the Spaniard is now one of the most influential figures at the club.

Speaking about the recent sackings, Howard told Unfiltered Soccer: “What I would suggest is that he (Amorim) didn’t have enough currency in the bank to ask for more power. Could he have received that over the next 12 to 24 months? Sure.

“Mikel Arteta did that at Arsenal. People forget now with this landscape of Maresca getting sacked at Chelsea and Amorim getting sacked at United. How big a win that was for Mikel Arteta that Edu left.

As an Arsenal fan, sum up Ruben Amorim’s time at Man United in THREE words.

“The Kroenke family said, ‘Right, let’s restructure this. Mikel, you’re the manager, you’re no longer the head coach. You’re going to make the decisions, and Edu has to go’.

“He won that battle. You don’t often win that battle.”

During the summer transfer window, Arsenal went bold by bringing in eight new players to construct one of the best squads in Europe.

Managers rarely get the luxury of having such depth in quality, but the North London club have trusted the 43-year-old to bring in who he wants.

Mikel Arteta’s remarkable longevity at Arsenal

Arteta’s longevity at Arsenal is even more impressive when you consider the number of coaches Chelsea, Spurs and Man United have been through since his appointment.

Their two London rivals have each had between seven managers; meanwhile, United have had four different coaches during that time.

Arsenal have had to be patient in waiting for silverware under Arteta, but their stability could finally pay off for them this season.
