Dennis Bergkamp goes down in many Arsenal supporters’ eyes as the greatest player to pull on the red and white shirt.
Signed from Inter Milan in 1995, Bergkamp took a little time to settle into the Premier League but soon found his feet to become an Arsenal legend.
His silky touch, vision and ability to create moments of pure magic made him a figure that would get even the opposition fans off their seats.
His form accelerated under Arsene Wenger and he was a major part of the two double-winning sides in 1998 and 2002. However, Tony Adams has revealed that he wasn’t to everyone’s liking in North London.

Tony Adams reveals that Marc Overmars ‘hated’ Dennis Bergkamp
Speaking on the latest episode of the ‘Indo Sport’ podcast with journalist Joe Molloy, Adams has revealed that his former teammate Marc Overmars ‘hated’ Bergkamp.
The two players were teammates for both club and country, having represented the Netherlands on countless occasions together, but Adams has revealed that Overmars hated being in the shadow of Bergkamp.
Adams explained: “it’s really difficult when you’re talking about different positions, different players, because they’re all, you know, Overmars hated Dennis because, you know, Overmars was brilliant.
“You know what I mean? But he’s so in the shadow of Dennis and he all his life and being another Dutchman, it’s like, ah, you know, you’ve got this unbelievable player,
“Because Dennis can make goals and score goals, you know, he’s a phenomenal player, which probably puts him in front of Thierry who scored a lot of goals, but I’m not sure how many, you know, he played.”
Overmars was linked with a return to Arsenal in order to replace Edu Gaspar as the club’s sporting director having taken up a similar position at Ajax.
The sensational revelation from Adams comes as David Seaman once revealed that Jens Lehmann and Manuel Almunia hated each other during their time at the club.
There may have been some tensions in the changing room, but it didn’t stop Wenger and his players from building some of the greatest teams that club have ever produced.
Comparing Marc Overmars and Dennis Bergkamp’s Arsenal records
Overmars left Arsenal in 2000 to move to Barcelona in a deal worth a combined £32m alongside teammate Emmanuel Petit.
It left a sour taste in the mouths of some Arsenal fans and many feel that the Dutch winger should have stayed and continued his development in North London.
| Arsenal records | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
| Bergkamp | 422 | 120 | 116 |
| Overmars | 141 | 40 | 33 |
It never quite worked out for Overmars in Spain and was often left having to impact games from the bench.
He was still an integral part of the double-winning team in 1998 alongside Bergkamp and scored the winning goal in a 1-0 win at Old Trafford that really gave the Gunners belief they could win the title.
