Tony Adams is one of the greatest players to ever play for Arsenal.

The legendary Englishman captained the Gunners to great things back in the day, and many still view him as the best leader the club has ever had.

Arsenal have had dozens of defenders since Adams retired, but very few have been able to have the kind of impact that he did.

One player was viewed by many to become a star in Arsenal’s backline when Arsene Wenger signed him many years ago. Even Adams tipped him to be a captain.

Sadly, his career has not gone to plan.

What Tony Adams once said about Rob Holding at Arsenal is now very interesting

Arsenal signed Rob Holding from Bolton in 2016.

Wenger saw something in him at the time that convinced him to sanction a move, and the defender became a fan favourite early on in his Gunners career.

Holding spent seven years as at the Emirates and played over 160 games in all competitions. People only remember how it ended, but he produced a few great memories too.

The Englishman silencing Diego Costa in the FA Cup final against Chelsea will always be a great moment, and performances like that probably convinced Adams that Holding has what it takes to be the main man at Arsenal.

In 2021, the Arsenal legend was asked to name one player who deserved to be the captain of the club.

In what was a surprise to some, Adams replied on Optus Sport: “For me, I’ve always been a big Rob Holding fan. I think Rob has got the right attitude.”

“Rob Holding is a captain in the making for me. I would like him to get on with it. He has had injuries. I don’t want to say it but I had won four trophies by the time I was 25. I’m not saying my standards, I’m saying he’s got the right attitude.”

What’s Rob Holding up to now?

After leaving Arsenal in the summer of 2023, Holding joined fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace.

The Englishman was always going to find it tough to displace Marc Guehi or Joachim Andersen in his debut season, but nobody thought he wouldn’t even get a sniff.

The defender played just one game at Palace during his 18 months there. After a troubled time at Selhurst Park, Holding moved to Sheffield United on loan until the end of the season.

He made his debut in the 2-1 win over Portsmouth in the Championship over the weekend, and we hope he can play more games until the end of the campaign.

Holding, still only 29, has many more years left in the game.
