Former Premier League striker Tony Cascarino has had his say over who among Arsenal and Tottenham will finish higher in the table at the end of this season.

Spurs have finished above us in each of the last four campaigns. That has raised claims that North London is suddenly white – even though we’ve won two trophies in the same period, four if you count the Community Shields.

After an above-average start to the league campaign, pundits and the media overhyped Tottenham and labelled them as serious contenders for the title. Predictably, that has come crashing down, and Cascarino has now predicted that Arsenal will finish higher in the table after 38 games.

He wrote in his column on The Times: “There is much to admire about the team Mikel Arteta is building at Arsenal. Results are gradually improving, a style is emerging and young players such as Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka are being given a chance to impose themselves on matches.

“Arsenal stuck with their man, believed in his project and look like a side on the up. Contrast this with Tottenham, who look devoid of both creativity and a Plan B when the going gets tough.

“Spurs are now only two points above their north London rivals and, although they have a game in hand, I would not be surprised if Arsenal finish ahead of them this season. Arteta’s team are going places. It will be fascinating to see who comes out on top when the sides meet next month.”

Arsenal Insider’s view:

We don’t want to jinx anything but Cascarino is spot on. If Harry Kane and Son Heung-min don’t perform, there’s no way Tottenham will win a game. That is not sustainable throughout the season and we’re seeing that now.

We will have a clearer picture in the next few weeks. Arsenal have a very difficult run of games coming up as we are set to face Manchester City, Leicester, Tottenham and Liverpool in four of our next six league games.

If we come out of that without too much damage, we should finish in a good position, especially with Jose Mourinho’s men ending their season with difficult games against Leeds United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Aston Villa and Leicester City.
