Two-time Premier League winner admits he is gutted he never played for Arsenal under Arsene Wenger

Whilst Arsenal were always admired for their tiki-taka football in the late Arsene Wenger years, they receive a different kind of applause nowadays.

Mikel Arteta has designed an Arsenal side who are incredibly strong at the back, and yet still creative in the final third, a balance that is improving all of the time.

Ian Wright thinks Arsenal will struggle to replace Martin Odegaard, but in truth any team would given his quality.

But although all is looking incredibly promising at the Emirates Stadium right now, there’s still a long way to go until this Arsenal team can be recognised among the greats.

Arteta’s side will need to win trophies and continue to break records in order to ever be mentioned in the same breath as the Invincibles for example – the pinnacle of Wenger’s tenure.

Micah Richards wishes he had played for the Invincibles at Arsenal

Speaking on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast, Micah Richards, Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer were asked who else they wished they had played for in their respective careers.

On Lineker and Shearer’s front, neither mentioned Arsenal, but Richards immediately pointed to Wenger’s Invincible side.

Richards knew how to win a Premier League title himself, he did so twice for Manchester City in the 2011/12 and 2013/14 campaigns.

But the former England full-back said he wished he could have played for Wenger’s ‘ridiculous’ winning machine if he could turn back time.

Richards simply said: “Invincibles, Arsenal side, that season, they were just ridiculous. Imagine, Big Meeks, Campbell, Toure, you know?”

Lineker then jovially replied: “I can imagine you’d play three games, you’d be on the bench, you’d be dropped.”

Gabriel and William Saliba might rival Sol Campbell and Kolo Toure

Jokes aside, Lineker is probably right – it seems unlikely that Richards would have played ahead of Lauren at right-back even in his prime years.

Richards was able to play centrally as well, but there’s no chance that either Kolo Toure or Sol Campbell would have dropped out – two of the best centre-backs the club has ever seen.

That being said, similar praise can probably now be sent in the direction of Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba, who just need to win the trophies to back that up.

That’s a statement that can be said for everything Arsenal have achieved and continue to over the last few years – it may all be forgotten unless trophies are won.

Although, Paul Merson has just shared a pessimistic title prediction in that regard.
