Tottenham Hotspur, annoyingly, are back in the Champions League tonight, and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry was told yesterday that Spurs could go all the way and win it.
Europe’s most prestigious club competition returned last night, and Jamie Carragher, Clint Dempsey and Henry were a part of the punditry team on CBS Sports. A segment on the show that involved Tottenham was simply hilarious – unless you’re a Spurs supporter.
Arsenal legend Thierry Henry’s hilarious reaction when told Spurs will win CL
The three pundits on CBS were asked to name their picks to win this season’s Champions League.
Henry claimed it would be Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, but predicted a good campaign for the Italian clubs that have qualified – Napoli, Inter, AC Milan and Juventus.
The host then asked Dempsey, a former Spurs player, for his prediction, and the American boldly said: “I’ll do something different. I’ll pick a dark horse. I’m not biased at all but I think maybe Tottenham.”
Henry and Carragher both burst out laughing.
“Shall I leave now? What?!” Henry said.
Dempsey continued: “Conte’s a winner. Maybe not necessarily having a great record in the Champions League but hey, I think it’s them. “They’re looking like they’ve gone strength to strength. They’ve done well in the transfer window.”
Henry turns away from Dempsey and says: “This is how I’m going to sit (after turning away from Dempsey). I’m out.”
The Insider’s View:
Mathematically, every team in the Champions League has a chance to go on and win it, but realistically, Spurs have about the same chance of winning the competition as Arsenal – we’re not even in it.
All jokes aside, Spurs have done well in the summer transfer window. Antonio Conte should be really happy with the team he has at his disposal, but they’re still far, far away from the best sides in the competition.
Lucky draws could help Tottenham get as far as the quarter-finals of the Champions League, but, in our opinion, there’s absolutely no way they’ll get beyond that stage.
