Arsenal have been searching for a new number nine for the longest time, and now, it looks as though they may finally get their man.
Indeed, Viktor Gyokeres is set to sign for Arsenal, and it would appear as though the Gunners may finally be set to get their man.
This will be the first time in a long time that Arsenal have a true goalscoring number nine leading their line.
Arguably, the last time Arsenal had this calibre of striker on their books was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and it’s fair to say that things ended on a sour note on that front.
Indeed, Aubameyang was ultimately released by Arsenal in 2022 after a disciplinary issue and poor form.
Many believe Aubameyang’s form took a serious dip after he signed his new big-money contract in September 2020, but according to Dean Ashton, speaking on the Premier League All Access Podcast, Viktor Gyokeres won’t go in that direction.

Viktor Gyokeres won’t rest on his laurels at Arsenal
Ashton spoke about Gyokeres and how he will get on after signing for Arsenal.
The pundit reckons Gyokeres will thrive at the Emirates, claiming that he has the hunger to become a star in the Premier League.
Ashton says that Gyokeres isn’t just the type of player to earn a huge contract and take his foot off the gas – something Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was accused of all those years ago.
“He’s physically strong. He can give Arsenal a different outlet if they need to. And I just think he’s at the right stage of his career, right stage of his development to go to a club like Arsenal that are craving that player,” Ashton said.
“And I genuinely think he’s going to thrive. And there’s something about him you can tell, this desire, this hunger to play and prove himself in the Premier League. It’s not like he’s coming and you think he’s just going to then sit on a wonderful contract.”
“I don’t think I see that at all from him. I see a player that’s absolutely desperate to prove himself and wants to do it at Arsenal.”

Gyokeres isn’t expected to allow his form to dip after signing his bumper contract at Arsenal, but, some players do let their standards slip after getting to this point in their career.
As Marvin Hagler once said in boxing, you don’t want to get out of bed and put in the same amount of work when you’ve been sleeping in silk pyjamas.
Once a player has that guaranteed payday in writing, standards can slip, and Arsenal know this only too well with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Aubameyang’s form dipped substantially after he signed his new Arsenal contract, and there may be a fear that Gyokeres could do the same after getting the biggest payday of his career.
Ashton doesn’t expect Gyokeres to go down this path, but you never know what’s going to happen until a deal is officially signed.
