Arsenal had 16 players headed to the 2026 World Cup in America this summer.

However, that number has now gone down to 15, as Arsenal full-back Jurrien Timber has picked up a groin injury.

The Netherlands national team wrote on X: “Jurrien Timber misses the 2026 World Cup. The 24-year-old defender has not recovered sufficiently from a groin injury to take part in the World Cup in a medically responsible manner.

“In consultation with the medical staff, it has therefore been decided that Timber will leave the national team’s pre-camp in New York after the game against Uzbekistan. We’re with you, Jurrien.”

That said, Timber’s compatriot Virgil van Dijk has sent a message to the Gunners star.

Virgil van Dijk gutted for Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber

Speaking to Nossport on TikTok, van Dijk admitted he’s gutted for Timber, who he believes has been one of the best players in the Premier League.

“Well, I’ve spoken to him almost every day since he arrived,” the Liverpool captain stated.

“And of course, I’m incredibly disappointed for him, but for us as well. I think he’s had a fantastic season.

“I think he’s been one of the best players in the Premier League, and he was really looking forward to this World Cup.

“And yes, I’m really saddened that he won’t be there. But we have to move forward, and that’s exactly what we’re going to do.”
