Wayne Rooney is worried for Arsenal after Erling Haaland returned to the scoresheet during Manchester City’s win over Liverpool.
It was a dramatic Super Sunday as Pep Guardiola’s team closed the gap on the Gunners back down to six points following two late goals on Merseyside.
Fill in the blank: Right now as an Arsenal fan, I feel _______ about Man City and Erling Haaland’s form…
Haaland assisted Bernardo Silva’s equaliser with six minutes remaining, and then in the 93rd minute, the Norwegian stepped up to score the winner from the spot.
Goals have been in short supply for the 25-year-old over recent weeks; however, his performance should give him the confidence to help City now chase down Arsenal.
Wayne Rooney is worried for Arsenal after Man City’s win
Wayne Rooney is now backing Erling Haaland to go on a run and put the pressure on Arsenal in the race for the Premier League title.
For the first time in almost a month, the City striker returned to the scoresheet in the Premier League ahead of a crucial run of games.
“I think what it shows is that when you have a little dip in form, your confidence goes a little bit; it affects everyone,” Rooney told BBC Sport.
“You look at Haaland, one of the best strikers in the world, just a little loss of confidence in front of goal, it does affect anyone.
🔮 How many points will Arsenal and Man City take from their next five Premier League games…
“So just to have him stand up and take that penalty and score, no doubt now that he’ll go on another run.
“The worrying thing for Arsenal now obviously is they have a good gap, but I think that win, what that’ll do to City and Haaland getting his goal, that will put a bit more pressure on Arsenal, I think.”
On Wednesday, City host Fulham with the chance to close the gap on Mikel Arteta’s team to three; meanwhile, Arsenal are away at Brentford on Thursday.
After that, all eyes will be on Arsenal’s trip to the Etihad in April, in what could be a huge battle in the race for the Premier League title.
Pep Guardiola speaks about putting pressure on Arsenal
Guardiola claims that City are only focused on putting pressure on Arsenal and hoping the Gunners slip up in the final 13 matches.
“From my point of view, 13 in the Premier League is a long time. Every game in the last 10 is so, so difficult,” he told the media.
“When you go into the last few games playing any team, playing to be in a relegation battle, it’s a proper football game that makes an influence in the fight for the title race.
“That is why being nine, ten, eleven points is more difficult and all we can do is breathe down the neck of Arsenal and try to (capitalise) if they slip.”
