Bukayo Saka’s dip in form has become a major talking point at Arsenal this season.

The England international will be the first one to admit that he hasn’t been at his best. He has scored just nine goals in 42 games, which is well below his usual level.

Arsenal fans have been trying to understand why, and many different theories have emerged. Some, like Ally McCoist, think it’s just a dip in form for Saka, while others believe he is tired.

Wayne Rooney, however, thinks it’s because of the pressure caused by Martin Odegaard’s absence.

Is it time to bench Bukayo Saka?

Wayne Rooney says pressure is the reason behind Bukayo Saka’s Arsenal struggles

Bukayo Saka has been one of Arsenal’s best players for years, but things have been a bit different this time around.

The Gunners’ academy graduate has had a couple of injury issues that have disrupted his rhythm, while contract talks behind the scenes may have proved to be a distraction as well.

To add to that, Saka has had the added responsibility of captaincy because Odegaard has struggled with injuries all campaign.

Rooney, who knows a thing or two about being a world-class player, believes that pressure is the reason why Saka has not been at his usual level this season.

He said, as quoted by The Metro: “Do you know what? You need to look at the pressure on Bukayo Saka, especially as he’s been the captain for a lot of the season with Martin Odegaard being injured.

“That pressure to win trophies, given where Arsenal have been, that can tally up and make it difficult for you. He has struggled this season, but he’s a fantastic player, and he has been brilliant.

“He’s played a lot of games as well in his career. I think we all know there’s more there.”

Martin Odegaard’s return could help Bukayo Saka get back to his best

Odegaard is expected to make his comeback against Southampton in the FA Cup, and his return could make a big difference to Saka’s performances.

The Norwegian takes a lot of creative responsibility in the team, which allows Saka to play with more freedom. The two players combine really well on the right side of the pitch as well.

When Saka and Odegaard are at their best, Arsenal can be nearly unstoppable, which is why the Norwegian’s return has come at the perfect time as we enter the most important stage of the season.

Mikel Arteta will be hoping that Saka and Odegaard will play at their highest level in the final months of the campaign.

If they do, the treble is achievable.
