Arsenal are in a really strange position at the moment.

The Gunners are flying high at the top of the Premier League, they’ve won every single game in the Champions League, and yet, their star players still aren’t being praised.

Viktor Gyokeres has received plenty of stick, Bukayo Saka has been questioned, while Martin Odegaard has been chastised for his recent form.

Arsenal may be winning games, but in an attacking sense, they aren’t exactly clicking.

Speaking on his podcast, Wayne Rooney has been discussing Viktor Gyokeres’ start to life at Arsenal, and he says that he thinks the striker has done quite an underrated job this season.

Wayne Rooney shares Viktor Gyokeres verdict

Rooney spoke about Gyokeres and why Arsenal signed him in the summer.

The England legend noted that Gyokeres was on fire before he joined Arsenal, and he says that despite recent criticisms, he is still making a difference in an attacking sense.

Indeed, Rooney suggested that Gyokeres, despite his lack of goals and assists, is in fact making a difference in terms of occupying defenders and making things happen.

“I think when you see what Gyokeres has done, I know it was obviously in a different country, but he was scoring more goals than anyone. He was actually on fire. So I still think, I’ve backed Gyokeres this season, people have given me a bit of a stick, but I still think he’s making a difference towards them,” Rooney said.

“I really do. I think he’s occupying defenders and that’s helping them. So I know he hasn’t got the goals or assists which you’d want from your centre-forward, but I still think he is having an impact.”

Viktor Gyokeres’ goal return may not matter

Viktor Gyokeres isn’t scoring for fun this season, that is for sure.

But, ultimately, the lack of goals hasn’t mattered so far.

Yes, in certain games, it has been frustrating to see Arsenal lacking that cutting edge at times. However, the only thing that matters is that Arsenal are six points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Gyokeres has played his part in getting Arsenal to this point, and, at the end of the season, if Arsenal are crowned champions, nobody will be speaking about the fact Gyokeres hasn’t been scoring for fun this term.

The only thing that really matters right now is that Arsenal keep winning games.
