Wayne Rooney has told Arsenal fans to start getting behind the team more if they want to win the Premier League.
Following last weekend’s defeat to Bournemouth, Mikel Arteta’s team were booed off the pitch by the supporters at the Emirates Stadium.
💭 How many points will Arsenal and Man City take from the next five matches?
Previously, Rooney claimed he had criticised the Arsenal fans for not showing up, especially against Paris Saint-Germain in last season’s Champions League.
Now, the former Manchester United star has urged the fans to get behind the team in the final five games of the season to stand a chance of staying in the title race.
Wayne Rooney tells Arsenal fans to back the team better
Wayne Rooney thinks that Arsenal fans must play their part in the final five matches after booing the team off against Bournemouth.
The ex-Premier League winner says supporters need to understand that the team will lose matches and they cannot give up so easily.
Rooney still thinks the title race is on, but the Gunners’ supporters will need to change their attitude to stand a chance of getting back in the race.
Rooney told BBC Sport: “I think for Arsenal to win the league, the Arsenal fans need to play their part. I thought in the Bournemouth game, the fans let them down.
“I said this last year as well in the Champions League. I thought the Arsenal fans were excellent against Real Madrid and really helped them, but I don’t think they turned up against PSG, and they went out.
🏆👀 I am feeling __% confident that Arsenal will win the Premier League title this season…
“So, I think they need to get behind the team a little bit more, support them, but understand that, you know, they might lose games at times.
“I think that the fans need to be better for the players and back the players a little bit more because the players that will have hurt them (booing vs Bournemouth), Arsenal players 100%.”
Perhaps Rooney is right to a certain degree, but also the team are the one who must show up, and against Bournemouth, they were seriously poor.
Arteta’s team have not been easy to watch, so bad performances plus a defeat are, of course, going to result in a negative reception from the fans. It’s on the players to give the fans something to believe in.
