Despite myself being born 2 years after Anfield ’89, as a die-hard Arsenal fan, seeing replays of that goal will always send shivers down my spine.
I know many fortunate people who made the trip to Liverpool that night, and every one of them say that it was the “best night of their life“. My dad has also said this to me many times (but I’ll be honest, I don’t blame him!)
A moment as good as that one produced by Michael Thomas, will never be repeated. Of course in the future, we’ll have absolutely fantastic moments that none of us will be able to forget, but I don’t believe we’ll experience anything as good as Anfield ’89 again.
With that in mind, I’d like to remind you all that we would have never been in a position to win the league title an Anfield, if we hadn’t of lost to Derby and drawn to Wimbledon in the run-up to the title-decider in Merseyside.
Admittedly, football has changed dramatically over the last 22 years, but the principles of the game still remain – just one kick can change everything!
Newcastle gave us a surprise lifeline last night, by holding out Manchester United to a 0-0 draw. And now, like us, our players need to realise that tonight is their last opportunity – if they are to be crowned Champions in May.
I accept it’s going to be a very difficult game against Tottenham tonight. They’re a decent side that will do everything they can to prevent us from winning tonight. And to be honest, from our point of view, the confidence levels of our players aren’t exactly skyrocketing at the moment. As you can probably guess, I’m feeling very cautious for tonight.
I will avoid talking about the game itself, because I don’t have a lot to say. But I’ll be blunt and just say this – WE NEED TO WIN.
I’m not entirely confident that we will get all 3 points, but I believe the boys can do it. With that in mind, we should never give up until it’s over. And when I say “we”, I mean everyone surrounding Arsenal Football Club. We’ve worked too hard for this, just to let it all slip away in a matter of days.
If Wenger does anything tonight before letting the team run out to the White Hart Lane turf, he should show them the Anfield ’89 DVD, just to ensure that they all realise how important tonight’s game is.
We could be heroes, just for one day…
