The Premier League title challenge this season will seemingly pit Arsenal against Manchester City once again for the opportunity to lift the trophy next May.
Mikel Arteta has already faced off against his old friend Pep Guardiola twice in the fight for first – with the latter coming out on top on both occasions.
The Gunners will fancy their chances for the 2024/25 season though, having shown gradual improvement year-on-year.
While all the action will be played on the pitch, there are some elements looming large in the background of the title race.
Manchester City’s legal battle with the Premier League over allegations of broken rules is ongoing, with a possibly unprecedented outcome.
So with that said, here’s a look at what the Man City charges are and how it may impact Arsenal in all outcomes.

Manchester City’s charges explained
The Premier League charged Manchester City in February 2023 with 115 counts of alleged rule-breaking from their investigations, with financial charges covering from 2009 until 2018, and charges of failing to co-operate spanning from 2018 to 2023.
The breakdown of those charges are split into five different categories:
- Failure to provide accurate and up-to-date financial information x54
- Failure to provide accurate financial reports for player and manager compensation x14
- Breaching the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Regulations (PSR) x7
- Failure to comply with UEFA’s regulations x5
- Failure to cooperate with Premier League investigations x35
On the whole, the Premier League has alleged that financial information from Manchester City wasn’t completely transparent, which could in turn see them break PSR regulations, while non-compliance is a separate charge itself.
Manchester City has denied these allegations, and the legal case was taken to court in September 2024, almost one year and a half after the initial charges were made.
What has Pep Guardiola said about the Premier League charges?
Man City boss Pep Guardiola has given his verdict on the legal case, claiming that he is looking forward to it being concluded.
Speaking to the press in August 2024, the Spaniard said: “I am happy it starts soon and hopefully it finishes soon for the benefit of all of us.
“Especially for the club but for all the other Premier League clubs, like for all the people that don’t wait for the sentence.
“I wish from deep in my heart to go to the trial, the independent panel – and I say it again, independent panel – and as soon as possible release what happened, and we will accept like always we have done.”
What are the punishments if Manchester City are found guilty?
There is still a full legal process to go through, with an independent panel yet to make a decision on the case, as well as any possible appeals from either party depending on the process.
However, if Manchester City are found to have breached these rules, then there remains a mystery over potential punishments.
With it being an unprecedented situation, the options available to the Premier League are far-reaching and potentially unlimited within their own rules.
That means anything from possible fines to points deductions and outright expulsion, though it remains to be seen what course of action they would take in that event.
Could Man City’s titles be stripped and handed to Arsenal?
In theory, if found guilty, Manchester City could have their titles stripped by the Premier League and handed to their rivals in each prior season.
However, that appears highly unlikely as an outcome, with finance expert Kieran Maguire claiming on Sky Sports: “It will be difficult for another club to say that they lost a title or lost probably more in access to the Champions League.”
Should that happen though, it would be even more unlikely that Arsenal would be handed any silverware as a result.
The charges span 2009-2018, which was when the investigation started, with the Gunners not finishing second to City in any of those years.
