Watford’s training ground is located right next to Arsenal’s, and the smoke apparently drifted across to their side.
Hornets coach Dan Gosling revealed that the smell was so strong it caught everyone’s attention and even affected him personally.
He said on talkSPORT: “We smelt the fire. Watford’s training ground is across the hedge from Arsenal. That smoke was blowing over the other day.
“It’s why I’ve lost my voice. I was walking out to training and thinking, ‘What’s that smell?’
“Obviously, this was before Mikel’s come out and done the press conference. There was smoke, and you could smell it; it was so strong.”
