Mikel Arteta is a Premier League champion, and those who work closest with him at Arsenal say nobody deserves it more.
Speaking on his Inside Football podcast, journalist Miguel Delaney revealed the picture those inside the club paint of their manager’s extraordinary work ethic.
“He is a phenomenally hard worker. In fact, it’s one of the reasons why, even speaking to people at Arsenal, they’re talking about how they’re particularly happy for Arteta in this because they know how hard he works,” Delaney said.
“He’s likened to the founder of a startup company just in how he can suddenly put in 90 hours work in a week without even realising. He’s an obsessive, as the description goes.”
👀 TRUE or FALSE: Mikel Arteta will become Arsenal’s greatest ever coach if he wins the PL and UCL titles…
The obsessive attention to detail that Delaney describes is evident in everything Arteta does, including his meticulous training methods and the subtle changes he has made at London Colney.
Mikel Arteta rebuilt Arsenal from a toxic mess into champions
When Mikel Arteta arrived at the Emirates in December 2019, he inherited a toxic environment and was working with a squad that fell well short of his standards.
There was a moment in the winter of 2020 where Arteta was in a very low place and considered walking away entirely, feeling he had made a terrible mistake in taking the job.
The squad was below the standard required, the atmosphere inside the club was toxic, and results weren’t coming.
But he stayed, and continued to pour those 90-hour weeks into the project, making this title so earned and special for those who witnessed that period.
Rather than accepting the mediocrity around him, he set about rebuilding everything from the squad, the culture, and the infrastructure, virtually from scratch.
Those 90-hour weeks have culminated in a Premier League title and a Champions League final, and for everyone at the club who has witnessed just how obsessively he works, it is entirely earned.
