Jack Wilshere knows what it takes to go from academy to first-team at Arsenal and he gave Max Dowman his Under-18s debut at 13, so here is everything you need to know.
Dowman came off the bench as Arsenal’s academy prospects thrashed Southampton 4-0 at London Colney in September 2023. Wilshere’s side asserted their dominance early on to run away with the points. Chido Obi-Martin got a hat-trick, with Louis Zecevic-John also scoring.
The result moved Arsenal’s U18 squad up to sixth in the U18 Premier League table after five matches. It was just their second win that season after beating West Ham United 2-0 on the opening day. But Dowman took the headlines on his Arsenal U18s debut at just 13 years old.

Neil Ryan also handed Dowman his England Under-16s debut in February 2024 as the Young Lions beat Saudi Arabia. The Gunners talent also laid on one assist in a 3-1 win and instantly became a key cog for England’s U16s. Ryan also started Dowman as an attacking midfielder.
Following his debut with Arsenal’s U18s against Southampton, Wilshere was full of praise for how good Dowman is already. The Gunners hero made his first-team debut at only 16 under Arsene Wenger in September 2008 and played 197 senior games, so he knows what it takes.
“We take a holistic view of the academy, pushing our players to excel,” Wilshere explained to Arsenal’s website after Dowman’s debut. “Debut opportunities aren’t handed out lightly and Max has demonstrated over the past few months that he deserves this chance.
“There are others on the verge of stepping up, as well. He handled the moment admirably, sending an important message to the team that when we introduce players, they possess the quality to contribute effectively.”
Dowman’s potential has also attracted many of the world’s biggest sports brands to target a deal with the youngster. Adidas ultimately won the race for Dowman’s signature as it agreed to a boots sponsorship in the 2022/23 season. He also represented Arsenal at the Vinci Cup.
