There have been plenty of great rivalries over the years involving Arsenal, with Arsene Wenger making a fair few enemies in his tenure at the club.

His battles with Sir Alex Ferguson will be remembered in the history books for the many challenges over the Premier League titles – some of which went the way of the Gunners.

While Manchester United and Arsenal had a few fiery meetings, few perhaps spilt into the chaos caused against Chelsea and Jose Mourinho.

In 2014, the nearly decade-long feud between Arsene Wenger and his adversary turned into a physical altercation on the pitch at Stamford Bridge.

Why Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho fought in Arsenal clash with Chelsea

Back in October 2014, Arsenal travelled to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea and Mourinho in his second spell at the club.

The Gunners fell to a frustrating defeat at the hands of their rivals, which took the Blues further in the lead at the time, while the North London outfit suffered a first Premier League defeat of the season.

It was an encounter defined by Mourinho and Wenger kicking off on the touchline as the duo saw tensions flare up.

Speaking after the game to the press, Wenger revealed that it was due to him trying to check in on the condition of Alexis Sanchez, who had been clattered by Gary Cahill just moments earlier.

“What is there to regret?” the Arsenal manager said after the game. “I wanted to go from A to B, and somebody confronted me before B without any sign of welcome. B was Sánchez, to see how badly he was injured.”

When asked what Mourinho said to him, Wenger simply said: “Honestly, I don’t listen to what he says. Push him? You would know if I really tried to push [him]. Come on.”

The Chelsea boss hit back after though, stating: “It becomes heated because it’s a big game, big clubs, big rivals, an important match for both teams.

“These conditions make a game of emotions. After that, there are two technical areas. One for me, one for him.

“He was coming into my technical area and not for the right reasons, to give some technical instructions. He was coming to push the referee for a red card, and I didn’t like that.

“But no problem. I think Jonathan Moss did a good job, and Atkinson too.

“I’ve done so many wrong things in football, sometimes due to emotion, but not this time. This time I was just in my technical area and it was not my problem. Game over. Story over.”

What Arsene Wenger has said about Jose Mourinho fight since

Many years have passed since that infamous clash on the touchline, with the former Arsenal boss discussing it in the open.

He was very brief in describing it, but spoke to Graham Norton on the Graham Norton Show about the incident.

He said: “You tell your players always to be in control but sometimes you don’t manage to do it… We didn’t talk a lot, it was just physical and it was basically me losing control.”

It’s an incident that the Premier League has only seen once or twice in the years since, with those tensions often taking a long time to grow.

With plenty of ongoing rivalries at Arsenal in the league, it may only be a matter of time before a repeat is on the cards.
