Why Manchester City have been shocked by what Arsenal have done in recent weeks

Arsenal hold all the aces in the Premier League title race after Man City’s slip up last weekend and there is apparently some surprise coming from those in Manchester.

After City beat Arsenal both in the League Cup final and the Premier League, it was assumed by many that the title would end up in Manchester again.

However, City’s slip up at Everton last week has handed Arsenal the initiative again.

The back and forth of this title race has been surprising all season long but according to journalist Miguel Delaney, City have been somewhat shocked by Arsenal’s response.

Manchester City surprised at how good Arsenal have been

Many Arsenal fans thought everything was done and dusted after the defeat at City.

But since then, Arsenal have shown resilience and strength and are now in pole position for the title as well as finding themselves in a European final.

And according to Delaney, that bounceback has surprised City.

“From what I’m told, look, it could be wrong, some of this is a bit secondhand information, but there was maybe a little bit of surprise on the City side at the way the last week went, that maybe there was a bit of an expectation that Arsenal would toil a bit through more, given how difficult the Newcastle game was after City beat them,” Delaney said on the Libero podcast.

“And like, there’s obviously been a lot of talk now about City celebrating that game quite vigorously. But yeah, like, after the Newcastle game, that they would have been expected to toil against Atletico a bit more, and then suddenly out of nowhere, we’re not out of nowhere, but Arsenal just swept Fulham away.”

“Because I suppose what we’ve expected from so many Arsenal games this year in 2026 has been like just a battle. Every game has been tense, gone to the wire, there’s been all this kind of angst around every single match because they’ve had narrow leads.”

“And this was basically, the Fulham game was basically the best performance, I would say, since the end of 2025 and the second half against Villa, the 4-1.”

It really has been a rollercoaster of emotions for Arsenal this season.

Fans have gone from talk of a quadruple to talk of no trophies at all and moving on from Mikel Arteta, to now being in with a chance of a memorable double.

Winning the title feels like the big one for Arsenal supporters. But if the club can land the Champions League as well, then it would be the biggest bonus imaginable.
