The Champions League draw for the 2024/25 Champions League is here but with some key differences from previous years.

This season will see the Champions League format change from the old group stage model into a larger league table view.

With the expanded competition set to feature 36 teams, there are also plenty of other changes to keep in mind.

Arsenal will be looking to take advantage of the freshness of the format to have a chance at landing their first Champions League trophy.

However, with the draw taking place soon, there is one noticeable difference in how the Gunners will draw out their opponents for the campaign.

Why is the Champions League draw using AI?

One key change surrounding the Champions League draw for 2024/25 is the use of computer software to delegate the matches for each team.

Teams will be given eight matches – four home and four away – with two teams drawn from each co-efficient pot.

While there is still a physical draw of sorts, with teams being picked out from a ball, the fixtures themselves will be chosen by an AI program.

It is claimed that if UEFA had to do this manually, over 900 balls would be required in a process which would take four hours to complete.

Teams will be unable to draw rivals from their own nations, meaning that Arsenal are set to avoid Liverpool, Manchester City and Aston Villa in the league phase.

The Gunners are set to be drawn from pot two, with confirmation expected once the final teams qualify for the competition.

Arsenal’s Champions League chances

So with the new Champions League campaign just around the corner, Arsenal will be hopeful that this year will finally be their chance to lift the trophy.

It will be a tough ask for Mikel Arteta, who will have to overcome some big teams to ensure a place in the round of 16 is secured.

The Gunners are likely to back themselves nonetheless, regardless of the teams they draw for the league phase of the competition.

It may take some adjustment, given the new format and the increase in games played, but there is a chance to create history this season.
