Arsenal may well still be in the hunt to sign Xavi Simons.

Arsenal have been linked with a move for Xavi Simons for some time.

The talented 20-year-old is currently plying his trade for RB Leipzig, on loan from PSG. The Dutchman has settled in well in the Bundesliga. So far this season, Simons has racked up 7 goals and 9 assists in 27 appearances, across all competitions, for the German top flight outfit.

Simons is a versatile and exciting player, capable of playing on either flank or in an attacking-midfield role. He possesses tremendous technical ability, has plenty of creativity and guile in his game, and boasts a keen eye for goal.

The 11-cap Netherlands international would be an exciting addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad. However, he is not the type of player that Arsenal desperately need right now. With the likes of Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz, Emile Smith Rowe, Leandro Trossard, Bukayo Saka, and Fabio Vieira, amongst others, all on the books at the Emirates Stadium, the Gunners are well-stocked for options in that part of the pitch.

Instead, according to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal are focusing their efforts on trying to source a new defender and a new striker this winter. Roma left-back Leonardo Spinazzola is one potential target who could be brought to the Emirates Stadium.

Will Arsenal make a move for Xavi Simons?

Meanwhile, in his Daily Briefing, Romano has provided an update on the Gunners’ chase for Simons. The reporter stated, “Arsenal have also recently been linked as suitors for Xavi Simons, who is having an excellent season on loan at RB Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain. My understanding is that Arsenal were following him last summer but now, there’s absolutely nothing new. PSG are very happy with his loan in Leipzig, and decision time will be in the summer – nothing is being decided in January for Xavi Simons.”

The main reason that Arsenal would not be able to seal a deal for Simons this month is a lack of the required funds. The Gunners only have a limited transfer budget at their disposal. They will also be wary of breaking any of the Premier League’s financial rules, having recently seen Everton and Nottingham Forest charged with breaching the division’s regulations in that regard.

In the meantime, Simons’ focus will be on making the most of his time at RB Leipzig throughout the rest of the campaign. Arsenal may have greater financial freedom come the summer, and could well make a concerted effort to sign Simons then. It would certainly be fascinating to see where the PSG loanee might fit in Arteta’s plans.
