£30m Arsenal star was badly let down by two teammates after what he did v Wolves

Arsenal midfielder Martin Odegaard was back to his best against Wolves yesterday, but he may still feel let down by what two of his teammates did.

Odegaard delivered a sensational performance as Arsenal secured a 2-1 victory to consolidate their place at the top of the Premier League, but the scoreline did not reflect the Gunners’ dominance as they really should have won by more.

After struggling for fitness and form in this campaign, Odegaard sprung back into life and was one of the best players on the pitch, creating an astonishing six chances for his teammates in addition to scoring what proved to be the decisive goal.

Odegaard let down by Leandro Trossard and Eddie Nketiah

Despite his outstanding performance, it was remarkable that Odegaard finished the game without adding to his assist tally.

He has been criticised for his chance creation at times this season, having notched up just two assists so far, and he may have been frustrated that he could not increase this given the way he was playing.

There were two occasions in the second half when Odegaard played excellent through-balls, but having put Leandro Trossard and Eddie Nketiah through on goal, neither player could provide the finish.

His ball to Trossard saw Odegaard pull off an incredible bit of skill to disguise the pass before sliding the Belgian through, who hit the keeper with his strike.

The £30m midfielder then produced a similar pass to put Nketiah in a 1v1 situation, and the crowd were almost celebrating already before he then hit the post with his strike.

Arsenal’s poor finishing against Wolves

In terms of chance creation, the Wolves game was one of Arsenal’s best performances of the campaign, as they scored two early goals for the first time this season and also saw Gabriel Martinelli hit the post in the first half.

Gabriel Jesus also missed a few chances in what was an otherwise excellent display from the Brazilian, and there was some amazement that Arsenal had not scored three or four times by the interval.

The poor finishing on display has underlined calls for Arsenal to sign a striker in the January transfer window, but overall Mikel Arteta will be happy with what he saw from his side for most of the game.

Arsenal have now won five games in a row, and the attack is clearly starting to click, but the next step will be adding a clinical edge to be able to finish chances and secure more comfortable victories.
