Arsenal fans will never forget where they were the day Sol Campbell was signed in 2001.

Campbell joined the Gunners on a free transfer from North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in one of English football’s most shocking deals.

Arsene Wenger and David Dein had worked for months on convincing the defender to make the move and had secret meetings to keep the deal away from the spotlight.

The England international went on to win two Premier League titles and three FA Cup winners’ medals during his time at the club. Now, Andrea Berta has the chance to shock Arsenal fans once again.

Andrea Berta can repeat Sol Campbell shock by announcing Martin Zubimendi signing

Campbell joined Arsenal with the club having finished runners-up for three consecutive seasons behind Manchester United in the league.

Mikel Arteta’s side have just repeated that feat and are now looking for some inspiration to get them over the line to a major trophy.

Arsenal are set to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in a £51m deal to bolster Arteta’s options in midfield alongside Declan Rice and Mikel Merino.

The signing of Campbell was seen as the catalyst for Wenger’s side to go on and achieve the double in the 2001-02 campaign.

Berta now has the chance to repeat history and announce the signing of Zubimendi to signal the same intent that the Gunners are out for success next season.

Arsenal’s summer of 2001 could mirror Andrea Berta’s first transfer window

Arsenal won the double after years of heartbreak in the 2001-02 campaign and decided to give their squad a fresh look during that summer.

Campbell was joined by four other signings, striker Francis Jeffers, midfielders Giovanni Van Bronckhorst and Junichi Inamoto, and finally goalkeeper Richard Wright.

It was an unprecedented window by Wenger but that show of intent worked as his side finally beat Sir Alex Ferguson to the league and cup double.

Berta is set to spend big once again this summer, Kepa Arrizabalaga has already been announced and the club are in hot pursuit of Rodrygo and Eberechi Eze.

In a repeat of 2001 with Jeffers, Arsenal are also vying for a striker, Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres are at the top of their list. History could be about to repeat itself at the Emirates Stadium.
