But despite the miss, the 21-year-old’s stats prove that he was actually undoubtedly one of the best players over the weekend.

Andrea Berta could be on the hunt for another midfielder in the summer, and the West Ham ace might be the ideal man for the role.

Arsenal should consider signing Mateus Fernandes

Arsenal really should be considering entering the race to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes this summer.

Fernandes is set to be in high demand during the next transfer window following his very impressive debut Premier League campaign.

The 21-year-old has been one of the Premier League’s top midfielders, despite West Ham struggling for the majority of the season.

The youngster has been one of the shining lights in a poor West Ham team, and that is why the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City are in pursuit of him.

But with Martin Zubimendi having really struggled for Arsenal over the last few months, the North London club should also be considering him.

If the Hammers were to go down, Fernandes could be available for a reasonable price, and he proved at the weekend why he would be a great signing.

Mateus Fernandes was so good vs Arsenal at the weekend

Many will simply associate Fernandes’ performances against Arsenal with his huge missed chance from the weekend; however, his stats tell a very different story.

The 21-year-old was easily one of the best players on the pitch, having been given the third-highest match rating by Sofascore.

Whilst Zubimendi was subbed on and off in the space of 39 minutes, Fernandes managed to give West Ham real control in the middle of the pitch.

The midfielder won the third highest number of duels, won the most tackles, completed the sixth most passes and had the fifth highest number of touches.

Fernandes was brilliant for the Hammers, and if they are to stay in the top-flight, he will have been a key part of their survival bid.
