Arsenal already have their next Leandro Trossard in their squad

The summer transfer window hasn’t really got going at Arsenal yet, but the first deal of the summer may be about to go through.

Indeed, it’s now being reported that Leandro Trossard is on his way out of Arsenal in a £20m deal that will see him head to Besiktas.

As you can imagine, there’s a sense of sadness around Trossard’s move away from the Emirates.

Over the past few years, Trossard has established himself as something of a cult hero at Arsenal – a player who turns up in the biggest moments with big goals.

Time after time, Trossard has grabbed late winners, key equalisers and game-changing assists to save Arsenal, and, you could argue, last season’s title win wouldn’t have happened without him.

Arsenal will miss Trossard’s ability to come up trumps in big moments, but, luckily, the Gunners have another player who can do the same.

How big can a fit Mikel Merino be for Arsenal next season after his heroics for Spain?

Mikel Merino is Arsenal’s new Leandro Trossard

On the same day news of Trossard’s impending departure broke, Mikel Merino was busy scoring the winning goal in a World Cup game for Spain.

Merino scored a last-minute winner against Portugal on Monday night, and it wasn’t surprising to see the Spaniard pop up in this situation.

Merino did exactly the same against Germany at the Euros in 2024, and since signing for Arsenal, he’s also turned up with some big goals in big moments.

Of course, Merino missed a lot of last season with injury, but he clearly has that same quality Trossard has in terms of being able to turn up with a goal when his team are in a bit of a desperate spot.

DateGameMikel Merino’s biggest moments

Winning big trophies is often about how you perform when it comes down to ‘moments’, and while Arsenal may be losing Trossard, Merino’s return to prominence after injury may well bridge that gap.
