Arsenal failed to capitalise on Liverpool’s dropped points, drawing at home to Everton on matchday 16.
For the third consecutive Premier League fixture, Mikel Arteta watched his side fail to score from open play.
Arsenal’s lack of threat from open play is becoming a real concern and was there in all its ugliness at the Emirates when Everton visited.
Sean Dyche was satisfied with how his side limited Arsenal, causing alarm bells to ring as Arteta continues to search for solutions going forward.

Arsenal record another Premier League draw
After the Gunners drew 1-1 with Fulham in a dominant but ultimately lacklustre display at Craven Cottage, it was clear that a win was required against Everton.
Instead, Arsenal walked away with another single point, remaining six points behind Liverpool and falling three points behind rivals Chelsea.
That’s now six draws for Arteta’s squad in the Premier League this season, which makes for concerning reading when taking a glance at the last campaign.
| Season | Draws |
| 2021/22 | 3 |
| 2022/23 | 6 |
| 2023/24 | 5 |
| 2024/25 * | 6 |
Arsenal drew just five times over the entirety of the 2023/24 league calendar, meaning that the Gunners have already fallen to more draws in just 16 fixtures this term.
With a win rate of only 50% in the Premier League this season, alarm bells are surely ringing in Arteta’s ears, with it abundantly clear that something must be tweaked to see improvement.
How Arsenal compare to 2023/24 season after 16 games played
Theo Walcott is concerned about Arsenal from open play, taking note of the lack of goals from open play scored this season compared to other sides.
That could be the answer to Arteta’s problems, with the lack of output failing to win the Gunners games when vital points are on the line.
| Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
| 1 | 15 | 11 | 3 | 1 | 31 | 13 | 18 | 36 | |
| 2 | 16 | 10 | 4 | 2 | 37 | 19 | 18 | 34 | |
| 3 | 16 | 8 | 6 | 2 | 29 | 15 | 14 | 30 | |
| 4 | 16 | 8 | 4 | 4 | 21 | 19 | 2 | 28 | |
| 5 | 16 | 8 | 3 | 5 | 28 | 23 | 5 | 27 | |
| 6 | 16 | 7 | 4 | 5 | 24 | 25 | -1 | 25 |
Having netted 18 goals from open play this season, Arsenal are falling behind both Chelsea and Liverpool above them, who have 27 and 25 respectively.
While tightening up from open-play scenarios is a must, improving results is another, as the Premier League table will tell you that Arsenal are regressing ever so slightly.
At this stage last season, the Gunners had 36 points from 16 games and 37 points in the 2022/23 campaign, recording only 30 at this moment, which clearly indicates a step back.
Arteta must look to turn things around as his side continue to drop needless points, which is already tainting the Premier League title race.
