Arsenal may already have a plan to sign Andre Onana - Opinion

Arsenal fans weren’t too pleased when Edu decided to sign Aaron Ramsdale over Ajax star Andre Onana in the recently-concluded summer transfer window.

The Gunners were desperate to sign a new goalkeeper this summer. We simply had to bring someone in, and rumours about our interest in Onana really excited Arsenal fans. However, Edu and Arteta decided to abandon that interest.

Ramsdale was brought in from Sheffield United for £24 million. (Athletic) Almost everyone can agree that the price is a bit too much, which is baffling considering that Onana would’ve been available for less than a third of that fee. (Goal)

The Ajax star has consistently proved his worth at the top level. He has been a regular for the Dutch giants over the years and has been absolutely phenomenal for them – both domestically as well as in Europe in the Champions League.

It wasn’t too long ago that Onana was linked with clubs like Barcelona and PSG. (Goal) However, a doping ban ruined his chances of a big move, and that could be why Arsenal decided against signing him this summer.

Onana was initially banned for 12 months for using a banned substance. That ban was reduced to nine months, but that still meant he would miss the first four months of this season. That may be the reason why Edu decided to go for Ramsdale, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he has given up on the Ajax man.

Onana could be an option for Arsenal in 2022

Bernd Leno’s presence and Ramsdale’s arrival means Arsenal don’t really need a new goalkeeper for this season. However, that could change next summer, as rumours have led us to believe that our current number one could be on his way out,

ESPN claimed a couple of weeks ago that senior figures at Arsenal believe that this will be Leno’s final season at the club. The German will have just 12 months left on his contract next summer, and the report says that the Gunners will sell him then.

That would open the door for a new goalkeeper and Onana could well be the first name on Edu’s wish list. The big difference here is that the Cameroonian will be available for free and no sporting ban will stop him from playing for us from day one.

Waiting a year, selling Leno and then signing Onana for free is not too bad a plan, but only time will tell if Edu can make this happen next year.
