Arsenal fans have been waiting all summer long for a new striker to be signed.

Indeed, Arsenal have been looking for a new centre-forward for years at this point, and now, they finally seem set to get their man.

Viktor Gyokeres is set to sign for Arsenal, and, for many, this is seen as the most exciting and important signing of the summer.

However, there is a case to make that Arsenal are about to make another, even more important signing than Gyokeres.

Cristhian Mosquera is set to sign for Arsenal too, and this deal could be absolutely vital in terms of bolstering Arsenal’s title chances.

Cristhian Mosquera could be more important than Viktor Gyokeres

As ludicrous as this may sound, the signing of Cristhian Mosquera may be more important than the signing of Viktor Gyokeres.

Think back to what has cost Arsenal the chance of winning the Premier League in recent seasons. Goals haven’t necessarily been the biggest issue.

Arsenal have averaged 83 league goals a season over the past three years, which is a very good return.

In comparison, the average number of goals scored by a Premier League winning side is 84.5, so Arsenal have been there or thereabouts.

Instead, Arsenal’s best shot at winning the Premier League was derailed by a defensive injury.

Cast your mind back to the 2022/23 season and you’ll remember William Saliba was injured towards the end of the season, and without adequate cover, Arsenal’s form dipped.

Saliba himself said that Arsenal would’ve won the league if he’d stayed fit.

“Unfortunately, I got injured during the year, in the final sprint. It’s clear that I was a little disappointed, but there you go, it’s a new season with new ambitions, I hope we will do better,” Saliba said, via The Standard.

“It’s clear that with me, Arsenal could have been champions. But now, injuries are part of football, and we are focused on this season.”

Now, with Mosquera headed to Arsenal, that lack of quality defensive cover is much less of an issue, and Arsenal are covering one of the most important bases here.

When is Cristhian Mosquera set to sign for Arsenal?

Mosquera is set to join Arsenal after a deal was agreed last week, but, as of yet, nothing is official on that front.

However, it may not be long before Mosquera is an Arsenal player.

Indeed, according to Dharmesh Sheth from Sky Sports, Mosquera is set to be announced as a new signing imminently.

Adding more depth and more quality to your backline is never a bad idea, and while most of the focus has been on adding goals to this team, the reality is that it’s defensive injuries that have cost Arsenal most dearly over the past three years of chasing the Premier League title.

Mosquera could have a vital role to play as Arsenal look to win the Premier League for the first time in 22 years next season.
