Arsenal may be set to sign their next Robin van Persie

Arsenal are on the verge of winning their first Premier League title in 22 years.

Indeed, as the Gunners sit nine points clear at the top of the league, it’s fair to say that Mikel Arteta’s side could finally be champions this season.

However, this Arsenal team will not rest on their laurels, and this should be a launching pad for more success rather than the end of a journey.

The Gunners will be looking to add to their ranks this summer, and one interesting link has emerged as of late.

Christian Kofane has been linked to Arsenal, and that signing would have some striking similarities to a previous deal done by Arsene Wenger.

Arsenal signing Christian Kofane would feel very similar to when they signed Robin van Persie in 2004

Back in 2004, Arsenal had just come off a title-winning period. They were already strong. But instead of standing still, they brought in a young striker with big potential in the shape of Robin van Persie.

A move for Kofane feels like the same idea.

Arsenal are close to winning the league once again, and while the focus right now is finishing the job, they are also planning ahead.

That is what top teams do. They improve from positions of strength.

Kofane’s agent has already confirmed the interest is real. He said:

“Yes, Arsenal’s interest is genuine. The manager (Mikel Arteta) likes him very much.

“I think it is too early to say (which club is leading the race), but due to the fact that the player speaks Spanish, like Mikel Arteta, and that William Saliba is originally from Cameroon, I would say Arsenal are in pole position.

“Yes, there is contact between me and Arsenal. But their focus right now is to win the league – from there, everything will start moving. He is a €100 million (£87m) player. With Kofane, Arsenal will have a top striker for the next 10 years.

“I have never had as many calls in my life as now regarding Kofane. Right now, he is the best U21 striker in Europe and the most complete one.

“He has speed, technique, defends very well and is strong in the air. It is very difficult to find all these attributes in one striker.”

Christian Kofane compared to Robin van Persie in 2004

Kofane to Arsenal does have some striking similarities to the move for Van Persie in 2004.

Young, raw strikers signed after a title-winning campaign (hopefully).

The numbers show that these two signings are a similar kind of gamble.

Van Persie joined Arsenal as the Gunners had just been crowned champions, and he was not joining to be the number one striker. He arrived young and improved over time, becoming one of the best forwards in Europe.

Kofane would likely be used in the same way. He would not need to lead the line straight away. He could develop in a strong team and become a star further down the line.

Arsenal are certainly going down the right sort of path if they bring Kofane in after winning the league.
