Arsenal set to land eight-figure transfer profit this summer thanks to remarkable Edu Gaspar deal

Edu Gaspar’s tenure at Arsenal is one that divides opinion, but one of the former sporting director’s decisions is set to benefit Andrea Berta.

Berta was unveiled as Arsenal’s sporting director in March, being appointed as Edu’s successor in the key role.

Edu shocked Mikel Arteta by leaving in November, which triggered Arsenal’s hunt to locate a worthy figure to take the reins.

Fortunately, the Gunners did that by acquiring Berta, who has a lot of experience in the European market following his time at Atletico Madrid.

While Berta has a busy summer ahead due to the mistakes Edu made last year when attempting to bolster the Arsenal squad, the Italian will have one thing to thank the former player for.

Edu Gaspar was smart to offer Reiss Nelson a new contract

If there’s one thing Berta will want to improve at Arsenal, it’s how poor the Gunners are at selling players.

Arsenal’s record departure was Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s £35m move to Liverpool, which, compared to other top six teams, is quite staggering.

Gabriel Martinelli has been linked to an exit, which would generate a record fee, but it’s unclear whether the Brazilian will leave N5 or not.

That being said, there is another avenue for the North Londoners to generate a healthy profit this summer, and it’s all thanks to Edu.

Reiss Nelson is wanted by Bournemouth on the back of an injury-tainted loan spell at Fulham.

Last summer, the Englishman’s asking price was reported by Football Insider to be around the £20m mark, with the fee expectedly, but not catastrophically, dropping since.

Transfermarkt note that Nelson’s market value currently sits around £14m, signalling a fall, but one that is higher than anticipated thanks to Edu.

In 2023, Edu tied Nelson down to a new contract at Arsenal, a deal that the Gunners have control over with the option of an additional year to extend his stay to 2028.

At the time, it was unclear whether Nelson would sign a new deal as his game time wasn’t guaranteed, and while things haven’t changed, the North Londoners sit in an advantageous position because of the contract.

Nelson could generate Arsenal a profit this summer

Being a player under contract at Arsenal until at least 2027, it’s highly unlikely that Nelson will leave the Emirates this summer for a price lower than an eight-figure fee.

Such is a huge boost for Arsenal, who will earn pure profit from the academy graduate’s potential sale, a situation that wouldn’t have arisen without Edu tying him to a new deal.

It would also be a loss for the Gunners as Nelson’s potential is huge, but being an injury-prone player, there’s a risk that his window to get into Arteta’s favoured XI has passed him by.

Thus, a move could be perfect for both player and club, with Arsenal eyeing a profit and Nelson eyeing a place to kick on with assurances over his future.
