Arsenal recorded a superb 4-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen as they continued their pre-season preparations, and there were plenty of positives.

Gabriel Jesus looked back to his best as he scored a superb goal, whilst Oleksandr Zinchenko and Leandro Trossard also got onto the scoresheet.

Mikel Arteta was able to make 10 substitutions throughout the game as his side tore the German champions apart, and despite a quiet transfer window so far, it showed that his squad is still full of top-quality players.

Kai Havertz was also outstanding, and he provided both assists as Zinchenko and Trossard scored within a minute of each other, before he found himself on the scoresheet in the second half.

Arteta sprung a surprise as he started Havertz in midfield, but the German delivered an excellent display to show what an asset he is becoming for Arsenal.

Havertz came up against his old club, having made 150 appearances for Leverkusen, and put them to the sword in a remarkable performance.

Despite dropping deeper from the number nine role he played in over the last six months for Arsenal and Germany, Havertz delivered a truly efficient display.

Havertz touched the ball just 26 times, a much lower volume than midfielders usually total at Arsenal, but every touch was with purpose.

He created two chances and notched up two assists, whilst his movement opened up space for Gabriel Jesus to thrive in. Havertz also won a tackle and misplaced just three passes.

Kai Havertz may be used in new midfield role

Many were sceptical about moving Havertz back to midfield given his previous struggles in the position last season, but this display showed that he can add value in a new role.

Havertz essentially played as a second-striker behind Jesus, and was a fulcrum near the opposition box. It was not his task to drop deeper and dictate the play from midfield, but his movement created space upfront, and whenever he had the ball, he was driving into the opposition box or linking up with the rest of the attack.

This new versatility will be of immense value to Arteta, and if Havertz can continue his fine form, he will be set for one of the strongest campaigns in his career.
