Arsenal’s worrying April form under Mikel Arteta after the worst possible start at Southampton

Arsenal’s return from the international break got off to a worrying start with the defeat at Southampton and fans will be hoping it’s not a typical April for the Gunners under Mikel Arteta.

Arteta watched on as his much-changed side failed to see off the Championship outfit and in the end, Southampton fully deserved their win.

Going into the rest of April, Arsenal face five more fixtures, including two legs in the Champions League and a massive clash with Manchester City.

Arsenal need to improve, and looking at their past form in April, it could be a nervy month.

Arsenal’s April form under Mikel Arteta

So far, Mikel Arteta’s time at the club has been a roaring success and the Gunners boss has a record of winning over 50% of his fixtures every month. Well, every month apart from one.

As you can predict, that month is April.

Since taking over at the club, April has been the most miserable month for Arteta and Arsenal as he’s won just 41% of games in the month.

That amounts to 34 games played, with 14 wins and 11 draws surrounded by 11 defeats.

16-year-old Max Dowman was Arsenal’s best player vs Southampton. Is that good news or should the other players be embarrassed?

Compared to Arteta’s best month, September – where he has 78% win rate – it’s nowhere near what’s required.

Clearly, this stacks up with the pressure that his players must feel and it very much is becoming a case of just getting over the line now for this Arsenal team.

Arsenal’s results in April during the 24/25 season

True to form, it was April last season that saw the wheels fall off a bit for the Gunners.

In the Premier League, Arsenal dropped crucial points as they drew with both Brentford and Crystal Palace at home and drew 1-1 with Everton away.

In Europe, they did manage to see off Real Madrid with considerable ease but were then seen off by PSG right at the end of the month.

That Premier League form proved costly, with Arsenal effectively dropping six points in those games, allowing Liverpool to cruise to the title that they eventually won by ten points.

Clearly, Arsenal can ill-afford a repeat this April. With home games against Bournemouth and an out of sorts Newcastle, six points is imperative. Then, the game at City will have less pressure, with a draw being a good result if necessary.
