Despite an excellent summer window, Mikel Arteta may have a big £38m Arsenal regret

The word ‘regret’ isn’t often one used when discussing Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal tenure right now, a side sat top of the Premier League.

Arsenal conducted their summer transfer business in excellent fashion, identifying and signing their targets with real purpose.

Declan Rice and Kai Havertz’s excellent recent form is a testament to the brilliant planning by the likes of Arteta and Edu Gaspar.

But as is always the case, there will be targets that get away.

And perhaps that can now be said of one £38m player who was linked with Arsenal in the summer, one now thriving in the Premier League.

Arsenal are still often linked with a winger, someone who can compete with either Bukayo Saka or Gabriel Martinelli.

And perhaps West Ham United’s Mohammed Kudus could have been the perfect man for the job.

Arsenal were strongly linked with interest in Kudus from the most reliable of sources, and at one point it looked to be a straight shootout with Chelsea.

However, Ajax’s Kudus ultimately ended up at West Ham, for a deal that is already looking like a bargain.

Arsenal and Mikel Arteta may regret not signing Mohammed Kudus this summer

Although West Ham do have an exciting project at hand, it does already seem as if 23-year-old Kudus is destined for one of Europe’s elite clubs.

Perhaps the Ghanaian may have already forced his way into the Arsenal eleven had interest progressed in the summer.

And Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta may now be watching Kudus flourish in England with the smallest bit of regret.

The caveat to this argument is how bloated Arsenal’s front line may look with the addition.

Perhaps Kudus’ arrival would have depended on the departure of either Emile Smith Rowe or Reiss Nelson – neither of which would be popular with fans.

However, it has got the point when cashing in on Smith Rowe may now reluctantly look like the best move for all parties.

Perhaps it could be a departure that Arsenal and Mikel Arteta eventually regret as well, but there simply doesn’t seem to be the minutes available for Smith Rowe to progress right now.
