Five of Arsenal’s best results at Goodison Park as iconic stadium set for Premier League farewell

Arsenal have enjoyed a mixed history at Goodison Park over the years.

This season’s result was certainly not one to shout about, Mikel Arteta’s side labouring to a 1-1 draw at Everton as Arsenal’s title challenge faded.

However, there have been some excellent results enjoyed on the blue half of Merseyside throughout Arsenal’s history.

With Goodison Park set to host its last ever Premier League fixture on Sunday, it is only right to look back on some of those successes.

Everton 1-6 Arsenal – 15th August 2009

On paper, Arsenal’s 2009/10 season started with a difficult trip to the Toffees.

In reality, Arsene Wenger’s side blew their opponents away.

Goals from Denilson, Thomas Vermaelen and William Gallas put the Gunners 3-0 up before half-time, with a double from Cesc Fabregas and a strike from Eduardo making it 6-0 thereafter.

The only blot on an otherwise superb display was Louis Saha’s late consolation, the Frenchman denying Manuel Almunia a clean sheet after finding the back of the net in the dying minutes of the game.

Still, a 6-1 win was an excellent result as Arsenal started the campaign perfectly.

Everton 2-5 Arsenal – 22nd October 2017

Another high-scoring affair and another game in which Arsenal ripped their opponents to shreds, becoming the first side to score 100 Premier League goals against a single team.

It didn’t start off this way, however, Wayne Rooney opening the scoring for the Toffees 12 minutes in.

That was as good as it got for Everton, though, Arsenal beginning to dominate the game and deservedly equalising before half-time through Nacho Monreal.

The second half continued in a similar fashion, Mesut Ozil heading past Jordan Pickford to put Arsenal ahead after linking up brilliantly with Alexis Sanchez, before Alexandre Lacazette made it 3-1.

Aaron Ramsey struck after that to make it 4-1, before Sanchez replied to Everton substitute Oumar Niasse’s goal to round out the scoring.

It was an excellent away performance, arguably some of the best football Arsenal played in Wenger’s final season in charge.

Sadly, it could not be replicated consistently, that result being one of just four Arsenal away wins in the 2017/18 campaign.

Everton 1-4 Arsenal – 29th December 2007

Arsenal travelled to Goodison Park in December 2007 sitting just behind Manchester United at the top of the Premier League table.

They were to leapfrog Sir Alex Ferguson’s side after another scintillating performance.

Trailing 1-0 at half-time because of a Tim Cahill strike, the Gunners were 2-1 ahead within 15 minutes of the restart thanks to an Eduardo double.

Emmanuel Adebayor made it 3-1 four minutes after Arsenal had been reduced to 10 men because of two bookings for Nicklas Bendtner.

Arteta then decided to even up the numbers on the pitch, the current Arsenal manager receiving a straight red card for a nasty elbow on compatriot Fabregas.

That led to both sets of players squaring up to each other, before Tomas Rosicky put the gloss on the scoreline with a strike in the 90th minute.

Unfortunately, Arsenal’s title bid would tail off in the second half of the season following Eduardo’s horrific leg break at Birmingham in February 2008.

Everton 1-4 Arsenal – 15th August 2004

Another opening day visit to Everton, another big win for Wenger’s team.

This victory wasn’t as much of a surprise as that enjoyed on the first day of the 2009/10 campaign, Arsenal travelling to Goodison Park after their Invincible season of 2003/04.

They picked up where they left off, goals from Dennis Bergkamp, Jose Antonio Reyes and Freddie Ljungberg putting Arsenal into a commanding 3-0 lead.

Lee Carsley then pulled one back for the Toffees, before Robert Pires put the result beyond any doubt by scoring Arsenal’s fourth in the final 10 minutes of the game.

The victory took Arsenal’s unbeaten streak to 41 top flight games, a record they would famously extend to 49 games.

Everton 1-3 Arsenal – 14th January 1989

Given the context of the infamous 1988/89 season, Arsenal beating Liverpool to the title thanks to the greater number of goals they scored across the 38-game campaign, the 3-1 win at Everton in January 1989 is arguably the Gunners’ most important victory at Goodison Park.

Paul Merson, Kevin Richardson and Alan Smith struck for George Graham’s side, cancelling out Everton defender Dave Watson’s finish.

Everton had been among the title favourites before a ball was kicked, and despite flattering to deceive in eighth place, they managed to reach the FA Cup final, emphasising the strength of their squad.

Indeed, Liverpool failed to beat their Merseyside rivals at Goodison Park in May 1989, the Toffees holding them to a 0-0 draw.

As such, Arsenal’s win in the same season is among the club’s best at Goodison Park, being deserving of its place in this list.
