Arsenal have suffered their first transfer blow of the summer.
Indeed, despite becoming Premier League champions, even the Gunners are susceptible to transfer hijacks, a lesson they have seemingly learned the hard way.
Arsenal had chased Morgan Rogers for months, but now Rogers is heading to Chelsea after a late hijack.
The deal is set to be worth £117m, and this isn’t the first time Chelsea have stolen a move from underneath Arsenal.
If you’re getting feelings of Déjà vu, that’s completely understandable.
Be honest: Would you have been happy if Arsenal spent £117m on Morgan Rogers?
Morgan Rogers a Mykhaylo Mudryk repeat for Arsenal
Chelsea have just hijacked Arsenal’s big-money deal for their top target on the left wing. Where have we seen that before?
Cast your mind back to January 2023 and you may well remember that a similar situation unfolded with Mykhaylo Mudryk, Arsenal and Chelsea.
Mudryk was seemingly set to join Arsenal in that January window, but a last-minute bid from Chelsea changed everything.
Arsenal had to pivot quickly, and, luckily, they found the right man for the job.
Leandro Trossard would sign for Arsenal in that winter window, and, ultimately, Trossard would become a top player for the Gunners and a key player for Mikel Arteta.
Now, Arsenal are in the same situation – their first choice target has been taken, and they need to find another Trossard-type.
A second-choice option who, in the end, could prove to be better than the player they initially wanted.
Make no mistake about it, Trossard proved to be a better signing than Mudryk ever would have been, and for a fraction of the price too.
Arsenal now need to find a signing in that same mould as Trossard, and, sadly, that is easier said than done.
Just a week after selling Trossard, Arsenal have been given a stark reminder on how brilliant a signing he was.
Arsenal now need to recreate that signing, and while Christos Tzolis is coming in, a Rogers plan B is also needed.
