Has Mikel Arteta lost his mind? Arsenal’s latest transfer link makes absolutely no sense

Arsenal fans are expecting the club to be busy this summer but if the latest potential signing is anything to go by, Mikel Arteta might well be going down the wrong path.

The Gunners have made some huge and successful signings in recent years and in the main, Arteta deserves praise for this.

Working with Andrea Berta, Arteta has plugged gaps in the squad and added quality where needed.

However, while new faces are needed this summer, suggestions of a return to the club for Dinos Mavropanos make no sense at all.

Arsenal cannot sign Dinos Mavropanos, he was sold for a reason

Mikel Arteta has done so well since he arrived as Arsenal boss. One his most impressive traits has been his ability to clear the decks and move players on who were not good enough.

Back in 2022, Arsenal did just that in selling Mavropanos for £5m.

The Greek defender was never up to scratch in an Arsenal shirt. Still, he has gone on to make a good career for himself, succeeding at Stuttgart being picked up by West Ham in 2023.

Now, though, with the Hammers relegated, Mavropanos could be on the move again but if Arteta is considering him, he should think again.

Mavropanos was part of a West Ham side that, on paper, should have been nowhere near being relegated last season. Nevertheless, it happened, with the Hammers conceding a whopping 65 goals, a record only Wolves and Burnley could surpass.

Worryingly, Mavropanos made 27 Premier League starts for West Ham during that time, and while he did score three goals and lead the team in clearances and aerial duels won, he’s just not at Arsenal’s level.

There is, of course, always room in teams for experienced players and those who can play a squad role.

But as we’ve seen with the signing of Christian Norgaard last summer, certain players are just not good enough for Arsenal.

With a title in the bag, it’s now imperative any Arsenal signing improves the squad. Sadly for Mavropanos, he’s had his chance at Arsenal and done nothing to show he’s worthy of a return.
