When Mikel Merino got injured last season, there were few at Arsenal who were overly worried about the impact of losing the Spaniard.
Despite being an experienced and versatile member of the Arsenal squad, many felt that Merino was easily replaceable and ultimately, it was rather him than one of the squad’s bigger names.
However, at this summer’s World Cup, a fit and returning Merino has once again shown how good he can be for Spain.
Two late winners in consecutive knockout games have created something of a mystique around Merino.
Indeed, that knack of scoring in big moments is a huge asset to have – just ask England and Jude Bellingham – and Arsenal fans will be delighted with him.
So much so, that after we at Arsenal Insider asked the question of Merino’s importance next season, fans were left in no doubt.
How big can a fit Mikel Merino be for Arsenal next season after his heroics for Spain?
Arsenal fans are backing Mikel Merino for a big role in the 26/27 season
If Merino can replicate this knack he’s got with Spain and bring it to Arsenal for next season, then it might feel like a new signing for the Gunners.
The Spaniard has done it with Arsenal in fairness but the sheer magnitude of the goals he’s netted at the World Cup show just how big a player he is.
Fans responding to us in our Talking Points section have also been clear on Merino’s importance for next season.
“He is too clutch, incredible squad option. Need him fit especially with Trossard leaving,” one Arsenal fan commented.

Another also praised the Spaniard, going into more detail.
“One thing is I have always stuck by Merino, when he’s fit and in the team he gives 110%, never scared to go through players in tackles and very strong on the ball and for a midfielder he can score goals as we saw when he got put upfront as we had no strikers fit at a time but him and Zubimendi are great with Rice in midfield.”
High praise indeed for Merino, who one fan simply lauded as ‘very good’ while another explained how they feel his role could help Arsenal next season.
Indeed, one fan even suggested he be used like Scott McTominay was at Man United.
“Very big. Just such a useful player to have available. Use him like Man United did McTominay.”
Clearly, then, it seems Arsenal supporters are big on seeing Merino do well next season.
Right now, there are so many positive signs for Arsenal at this World Cup and Merino might just be the biggest of them all.
