Arsenal’s North London rivals, Tottenham Hotspur, have finally brought an end to their trophy drought by winning the Europa League.

Spurs had gone over 17 years without touching any silverware. They came close on a couple of occasions, but always fell short and were ridiculed.

Now, for just the second time this century, Tottenham have a trophy to show off, but does the Europa League really mean anything in the grand scheme of things?

The financial figures involved tell the whole story.

Tottenham’s prize money after winning the Europa League compared to Arsenal’s after Champions League exit

Tottenham fans are over the moon after winning the Europa League.

Spurs took part in a shocking game of football in the final against Manchester United in Bilbao. It was a terrible watch and has to be up there with the worst finals of all time.

A solitary Brennan Johnson goal proved to be enough for Ange Postecoglou’s side to lift the Europa League trophy.

For winning the competition, Tottenham will receive a prize money of £10.95 million (TBR Football).

Arsenal, on the other hand, didn’t win the European competition they were in – the Champions League. The Gunners didn’t even reach the final.

Despite that, Arsenal earned £13 million in prize money for making it into the semi-finals, which is more than what Spurs have received for winning their final.

That should tell you all you need to know about where the two sides currently are.

Which club has had the better season – Arsenal or Tottenham?

There have been a few ridiculous claims that Tottenham have had a better season than Arsenal because they won the Europa League.

That is absolute nonsense!

The difference in prize money above tells you that Arsenal’s achievements this season are worth a lot more than Spurs winning a second-tier competition.

Yes, it’s fantastic for them, and their fans should absolutely celebrate. But, winning the Europa League means that you are just the 37th best team on the continent.

Arsenal, who made it into the semi-finals of the Champions League, are the third-best team in Europe, along with Barcelona.

To add to that, Mikel Arteta’s side are second in the best league in the world, while Tottenham are 17th, just a place above the relegation zone.

If that doesn’t tell you that Arsenal have had a better season than Tottenham, nothing will.
