Things have been nothing short of a nightmare for Edu Gaspar since he left Arsenal, proving that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

It came as a real shock to learn that Edu was going to leave Arsenal in November 2024, as the former sporting director set his sights on a different challenge.

The Brazilian had been a member of Arsenal’s backroom staff since 2019, with his arrival happening just before Mikel Arteta’s appointment.

Arteta was stunned by Edu’s departure, as the two had built quite a foundation at Arsenal, but the latter got cold feet.

Joining Nottingham Forest as global head of football seemed like an exciting adventure for Edu, but that couldn’t be further from reality.

Edu Gaspar’s Nottingham Forest exit proves the mistake he made leaving Arsenal

What seemed like a thrilling project and a new career venture lasted just nine months, as things got messy for Edu at Nottingham Forest.

Tensions appeared between Evangelos Marinakis and Edu as Forest’s aspirations were not met in any regard, as seen by the Tricky Trees being on their fourth manager of the season.

Edu and Forest look to be no more, in what was a disastrous nine months for the Brazilian, which only emphasises the mistake he made leaving Arsenal in the first place.

In North London, Edu was respected; he held an honourable title at his former club, he worked closely with Arteta to deliver success, and for the most part, he achieved that.

Given how the duo had turned Arsenal from eighth-place finishers to title challengers, their work as a pair was celebrated, which made Edu’s departure all the more of a surprise.

Few clubs encourage a sporting director and manager to work so closely together, with Edu and Arteta taking control of Arsenal’s transfers during their time together.

Why, and how, does one go from such a reputable position, only to jump ship and fail to tread water elsewhere?

Looking back, there are several indicators that Arsenal are better off now that Edu has gone, the primary one being transfers.

Who was Edu Gaspar’s worst signing at Arsenal? Willian, Raheem Sterling or someone else?

Edu’s last transfer window at the Emirates was a calamity, with his final signings being Raheem Sterling and Neto.

Somehow, he then did an even worse job at Forest, overseeing a window that saw Forest spend £200m, only to see their squad quality decrease and end up in a relegation battle.

Leaving Arsenal was a mistake, and joining Forest was an even bigger one, posing the question: Where does Edu go now?
