Myles Lewis-Skelly had a dream debut season at Arsenal.
The 18-year-old was given opportunities at left-back last campaign after injuries to Riccardo Calafiori, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kieran Tierney last term.
Despite naturally being a midfielder, he thrived in that position and performed magnificently, even against big teams like Real Madrid and Manchester City.
However, Lewis-Skelly hasn’t had much game time at Arsenal this season, and that may not change for a while.
Riccardo Calafiori’s impressive display for Italy is bad news for Myles Lewis-Skelly
Arsenal star Calafiori started for Italy against Estonia, and he was one of the best players on the pitch.
The former Bologna man played on the left side of a three-man defence, but in typical fashion, he was everywhere.
Like Mikel Arteta, Azzurri boss Gennaro Gattuso seems to have given a free role to Calafiori.
The Italian went forward with purpose when he got the ball and always tried to make things happen. He created chances for his teammates and tried to score himself as well.
Calafiori is in the form of his life right now, and that is excellent news for Arsenal.
However, for Myles Lewis-Skelly, it means he will continue to be a backup at left-back, and there’s a threat there too.
Piero Hincapie is expected to be fit after the international break, and he is capable of playing at left-back as well.
If Arteta prefers him there, Lewis-Skelly’s game time will reduce even further, which is bad news for the youngster ahead of the World Cup at the end of this season.
Arsenal star Riccardo Calafiori’s stats for Italy vs Estonia are so impressive
Calafiori is a really unique footballer.
The Italian always starts in defence, but he can play in every single position on the pitch. He is so comfortable with the ball everywhere, and that is a very rare asset.
Against Estonia on Saturday night, Calafiori had 108 touches of the ball and completed 80 of his 87 attempted passes. He also created two chances and had four shots at goal.
Defensively, the Arsenal star made three interceptions, five clearances and five recoveries. He also won seven of his eight attempted aerial duels and wasn’t dribbled past a single time in the entire game. (Sofascore)
