Paul Scholes is adamant that England should take Max Dowman to the World Cup as the teenager continues to impress for Arsenal.
Dowman has been one of the biggest breakout stars in Europe this season with his performances for Arsenal at such a young age, catching the attention of many.
Should Max Dowman go to the World Cup with England: Too soon, or just right?
Despite only being 16, Dowman already looks like Arsenal’s best attacker right now, and he could play a key role in helping the Gunners win the Premier League.
Now, there is a lot of talk around whether Thomas Tuchel should take the teenager to the World Cup, and Scholes reckons it is a no-brainer decision.
Paul Scholes tells Max Dowman
Paul Scholes has said he does not care who he replaces in the England squad, but Max Dowman simply must go to the World Cup.
The former Manchester United midfielder claims that Spain would have no issues selecting such a young talent, and now the Three Lions must do the same.
Scholes told The Good, The Bad & The Football: “No, f— that. Look at Spain with Yamal. He was 15 or 16 when he won the Euros.
“Get him in, we’ve not got a player like him. Yeah, I think he is (whether Tuchel is the type of manager to make such a big selection decision).”
How closely do you think Max Dowman will follow in Lamine Yamal’s footsteps?
When asked which player he would leave out, Scholes added: “Anyone, I don’t care. I think he is unbelievable. He’s brilliant. Spain would do, and they are successful. All day long!”
It would be a lot of pressure on such a young player; however, the 16-year-old has clearly shown he is ready to make an impact for England.
Max Dowman would be better for England than Noni Madueke
Scholes is spot on that Dowman should be in England’s World Cup squad because game-changers win tournaments, and Arsenal’s teenager already looks like one.
He has come off the bench with courage, imagination and real end product, helping the Gunners to beat Everton and Sporting CP by producing key moments.
Jarrod Bowen is reliable, and Noni Madueke has qualities, but Dowman offers something rarer: unpredictability.
Tuchel will need players who can swing tight knockout games in 20 minutes, not merely hold their place in a squad list.
Dowman has earned that chance with Arsenal, and England would be foolish to ignore such an obvious wildcard.
